Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from the community, technical inquiries, and general advice for new collectors.
The Technical Essentials
- "Is a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) required for a piece to be real?"
- No. In the production world, most art was never intended to be sold, so they don't have "official" paperwork. A COA from a gallery is great for resale, but screen-matching and studio markings (peg holes, sequence numbers) are the only definitive proof of authenticity.
- "Can I reverse Vinegar Syndrome?"
- No. It is a terminal chemical reaction. You can only manage it by "outgassing" the cel in a well-ventilated area and using MicroChamber paper to soak up acids. Never store a "vinegar" cel in a closed frame or box with other art; it will spread.
- "Should I peel a cel that is stuck to its drawing?"
- It depends on the severity. If the paint has fully fused to the paper, pulling them apart will result in permanent "paint loss" and a ruined drawing. However, in cases of a "tiny stick" where the paint hasn't fully melted into the fibers, they may separate easily with gentle pressure.
- The Rule of Thumb: If it doesn't give way immediately with a light touch, stop. It is far better to leave them stuck and preserve the image than to force it and destroy the integrity of the paint.
- "Why does my cel have brown lines instead of black?"
- This is known as "line fading" or "ghosting." Over decades, certain studio inks (especially those used in 80s/90s anime) react to UV light and oxygen. While it lowers the value slightly, it is a natural sign of age. Avoid "re-lining" them with markers, as this is considered tampering.
Market & Community
- "How do I know if I'm overpaying?"
- Don't look at "Active" listings; look at "Sold" listings on eBay and Yahoo! Japan. Market value is determined by what people actually paid, not what a seller is dreaming of.
- "Where can I get a second opinion?"
- The community is your best resource. If you're unsure about a listing, drop it into the Cel Hub Discord or the r/AnimationCels subreddit. Experienced collectors can often spot a fake or a "re-lined" cel in seconds.
